50 years ago this week, the iconic British retailer Marks & Spencer opened its doors for the first time in the heart of St Helier. M&S was first brought to Jersey by Le Riches, a long-standing Jersey business founded by Samuel and Sarah le Riche who originally opened their St Helier grocers shop in 1818.

Marks & Spencer is inviting customers to join in the 50th anniversary celebrations at theKing Street store this Saturday, 13th May. Celebrations will include some delicious M&S nibbles and wine, along with some very special giveaways and offers.Over the next few months, M&S colleagues will celebrate by volunteering and fundraising for Macmillan, The British Red Cross and Shelter. There will also be a special BBQ for colleagues across M&S Jersey.

Marks & Spencer’sJersey store in the 1960s originally sold ladies, men’s and children’s clothing. Customers in Jersey embraced M&S’ unique offer from the start and so the store increased its range of products to include textiles, food and home products over the next few years. New stores opened at Red Houses and St Clement, then more recently St John and St Peter. Liberty Wharf’s Marks &Spencer Home store is the latest addition to the franchise and serves as the retail anchor in the Waterfront’s historic granite shopping centre.

The Marks & Spencer franchise passed over to SandpiperCI when it bought the then CITraders 10 years ago. Sandpiper is the largest retailer in the Channel Islands and its Marks &Spencer Jersey franchise forms a significant part of the business. Now, in 2017, the business offers Jersey customers the best of Marks & Spencer Food, Womenswear, Menswear and Home across 56,000 sq. ft. of retail space operating from 6 stores. Marks &Spencer Jersey employs more than 300 people.

Stephen Forrester, Marks &Spencer Jersey’s Managing Director said: “Marks &Spencer was a popular store when it opened in St Helier 50 years ago and it remains popular today. The strong brand is synonymous with quality and good value and attracts thousands of customers to our stores every day. I have every confidence Marks & Spencer’s unique offer will continue to thrive in Jersey and we look forward to serving existing and new customers over the next 50 years.”

James Harvey, Head of International Franchise at Marks & Spencer said: “We are really proud to be celebrating our fiftieth anniversary in Jersey with our customers and our partner SandpiperCI. Working together, we are able to offer customers in Jersey the best of Marks & Spencer, and we hope that customers will continue to enjoy our exceptional quality, stylish clothing and outstanding quality food for many years to come.”
